New Study Reveals Benefits of Bariatric Surgery Center Accreditation

Dr. Shahram Salimitari has enjoyed a successful career as a board-certified bariatric surgeon offering a multidisciplinary approach to weight loss. To stay abreast of updates in his field, Dr. Shahram Salimitari maintains membership with a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons (ACS).

ACS recently publicized a study by the University of California, Irvine, that found patients who underwent weight loss surgery at an accredited facility were less likely to encounter complications and were two times less likely to pass away in the hospital. Published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, the study suggests that bariatric surgery center accreditation contributes to enhanced operational safety and higher standards of surgical care. These findings support the efficacy of the recent accreditation movement, which was inspired by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ 2006 to 2013 mandate that limited bariatric surgery coverage to accredited facilities.

The researchers generated their findings by analyzing the results of 775,040 bariatric surgeries over a 10-year time span and controlled for advancements in the surgical field. After accreditation became more widely adopted, they found that surgical outcomes improved significantly.
